Los Osos
An Open Exploration of Natural Form and Space

Through observation and experimentation Los Osos works to define natural principles of form and apply them to design. The primary source material and inspiration of the project are the natural regions of the United States' Pacific Northwest.

A central value of the project is openess: stay open to the source material, keep the process open to viewers, remain open to failure, maintain an open scope, and make things open to interpretation. The visitor can judge the success of the project in these regards by visiting our project log.

the product
All of the products of Los Osos originated, in concept and form, in the research phase of the project. There were a few pre-existing seeds of ideas which found a home in the project, the most important ones include; challenging the value system imposed by the modern manufacturing process, and practicing design through a philosophy of the hand. Los Osos's true output is a combination of documentation, ideas and products.

los osos verde?
Though it is not a "green" venture per se, Los Osos does share many values with the green design movement. Fundamentally, we believe that any kind of production should be conscious of resource consumption, product use and recycling. We focus our efforts in two ways; using natural and recycled materials, and advocating a change in consumerist values.

the name
The name is half arbitrary/half purposeful. Los Osos is "The Bears" in Spanish. The meaningful side is that the bear is a surrogate for man in the woods. He/she is the end user of the natural environment.

who
The Los Osos project is by Eric Ludlum and Laurence Sarrazin with significant support from Ben & Christina Friedle.
